• Which operating systems can be used inside the virtual machines?

Currently the following are available: Linux. 32-bit and 64-bit.

  • Can I resell services operated using the virtual machine?

Of course, both managed and unmanaged virtual machines could be used for running services, which you resell to your customers. Typical examples is running a webhosting service within the virtual machine.

  • Which Linux distributions can be used?

    Pre-installable distributions:

    • Debian GNU/Linux 6 Squeeze (preferred)
    • Debian GNU/Linux Squeeze / Sid
    • Gentoo 12.0
    • CentOS 6
    • Fedora 16
    • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 11.10
    • OpenSUSE 12 (not recommended with packages below Virtua Expert)

  • Is there a reseller program?

Yes, we have a reseller program. More information: For resellers.

  • Are there any limitations regarding the application that can be used inside the virtual machine?

There are no limitations. Any kind of application can be run on the virtual machine: webservers, simulation applications, etc. The service provider cannot take responsibility for the applications used in the virtual machine or for the outgoing network traffic generated in the virtual machine. The user of the virtual machine takes full responsibility.

  • Can you tell about the network connections?

We are connected to various Internet eXchange points: 1 Gbit/s to InteRoute (World), 1 Gbit/s to BiX (Hungary), 1 Gbit/s to SloanePark (World), 1 Gbit/s to SIX (Slovakia), 1 Gbit/s to NIX (Czech Republic), 1 Gbit/s to WIX (Poland).

  • What is a CPU unit?

The CPU unit means the share ratio of the physical CPU time. Demonstrated with an example: two virtual machines are running, one of them has 2000 CPU units, while the other one got 4000 CPU units. In this case the one with the 2000 CPU units will get 33.3% of the physical CPU, the other one with 4000 CPU units will get the remaining 66.6%. But if the virtual machine with the 4000 CPU units is only using 10% of CPU capacity, then the remaining 90% can be used by the virtual machine with the 2000 CPU units, if needed.
So in practice, the more CPU units a virtual machine got, the much faster it is. The consumed CPU time can be seen on a graph on the administration interface.

  • Is there a way for another virtual machine to access my data?

Absolutely no, the virtual machines are completely isolated. Every machine got its own disk space and memory, and got exclusive access for these.

  • Can I use a custom kernel?

The kernel of the operating system is supplied by the provider for technical reasons. Our goal is a generic configuration, which is suitable for all users. Of course we try to satisfy special needs, which could be just a simple configuration option or a separate kernel patch. In this case discussion is needed in advance. This applies to both Linux and NetBSD.

  • Which technology is used to realize this service?

The services of VirtualisGep.hu are based on Xen virtualization technology. Xen is a paravirtualization solution, therefore the virtualization overhead is minimal, the applications in the virtual machine have nearly the same performance if they were running on a real computer.
A mirror of the Xen software can be found on one of our servers: http://xen.virtualisgep.hu

  • Which filesystems can be used for the installed system?

The type of the filesystem can be selected by the customer from the following list:
    Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, XFS, ReiserFS, JFS.
The disk space can be divided into various filesystems.

  • How do the virtual machines share the internet connection?

The virtual machines have their own virtual network interfaces, which share the physical network interface. Of course these are isolated too, the virtual machines cannot see or modify each others network traffic (eavesdropping is not possible). They share the physical interface equally, so none of virtual machines can monopolize it, the access is guaranteed for all virtual machines. We continuosly monitor the network usage, when we detect that the free capacity is below a particular level, then we immediately start to work on upgrading.

  • Is it possible to stop my virtual machine, and for example to start it after two days?

The virtual machine can be stopped and started any time, the customer decides what and when to do. Of course the state of the virtual machine does not affect the monthly fee, so it won't reduce the costs if it's stopped.

  • What about running a graphical interface on the virtual machine, which I forward to my own machine?

Yes, it is possible, for example with VNC, or using SSH with X11 forwarding.

  • Which distribution shall I choose?

Select a distribution, which you or you're system administrator knows the best. If you still can't choose or you also need system administration tasks from us, then we prefer Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch, because it's great customization abilities.

  • Can I use my own firewall rules within the virtual machine?

Yes, you can use your own firewall rules. The NetFilter in the Linux kernel is fully available, additionally one can also use: QoS (Quality of Service), IPSec, IP tunnelling.

  • Do I get real root access?

Yes, full root access. Everything can be modified in the virtual machine.

  • Can I upgrade the pre-installed Linux distribution?

Yes, we encourage you to upgrade frequently. The pre-installed distribution is just a base system, for example a pre-installed Debian Sarge can be upgraded to Debian Etch using the apt-get program.
